Changing of the collar: Uga XI to be introduced at Georgia spring game
By John Buhler
Georgia will introduce its new mascot Uga XI at the Dawgs’ spring game on Saturday afternoon.
Here comes the Boom, ready or not! Here comes the Dawgs from the South!
It will be a change of the collar in Athens on Saturday, as Uga XI (Boom) will take over for Uga X (Que) in a special ceremony during the Dawgs’ spring game. Boom may be a 10-month old English bulldog, but this Dawg has to follow up the winningest mascot in Georgia football history. Que took over in 2015, having seen the meteoric rise of the program under Kirby Smart’s entire tenure.
With an unprecedented three-peat on the horizon, it will be Boom or bust for Georgia this season.
Georgia introducing Boom as Uga XI during Dawgs’ spring game on Saturday
Que had been the Dawgs’ good luck charm. When he took over Uga duties in 2015, the program was in a very precarious spot. Things had gotten stale under Mark Richt and Georgia seemed light years away from ever catching Alabama in the SEC standings. It took a few seasons, but Smart eventually slayed the dragon up in Indianapolis. Now, the Dawgs have won back-to-back titles.
Under Que’s reign from the Dawg House, Georgia has won two national championships, two SEC titles, five College Football Playoff games and five SEC East division titles. This has been the best six-year run in program history by a country mile. I mean, the Dawgs have won four different New Year’s Six bowls (Orange, Peach, Rose, Sugar), including the Peach Bowl twice. That is remarkable.
Even if Boom does not have the same success as Que, this program is not slowing down anytime soon. Smart will win at least one more national championship before probably retiring early from the coaching profession. It is a lot to do what he has done so quickly at his alma mater. What makes this even crazier is the Dawgs have gone from the hunters to the hunted in just two years.
May Boom be as good of a DGD as Que was roaming the sidelines during the Dawgs’ glory years.
