Despite having one of the youngest rosters in the league, the Oklahoma City Thunder nearly made the playoffs. How many upcoming NBA draft picks do they have to add talent?

The Oklahoma City Thunder battled their way to the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference and beat the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round of the Play-In Tournament. A loss to the Timberwolves in the second round kept them out of the actual playoffs but clearly, this is a team with a bright future.

In addition to all their young talent, the Thunder have a huge number of extra picks coming in the next three NBA Drafts, a result of some shrewd trades made over the past few seasons. Here is exactly what’s sitting in their NBA Draft war chest right now.

Thunder 2023 NBA Draft picks:

  • 1st-round pick (OWN)
  • 2nd-round pick (POR)

Thunder NBA Draft 2024 picks:

  • 1st-round pick (OWN) — lease favorable of their 2024 first-rounders to DEN
  • 1st-round pick (HOU, protected 1-4)
  • 1st-round pick (LAC)
  • 1st-round pick (UTA, protected 1-10)

Thunder NBA Draft 2025 picks:

  • 1st-round pick (OWN, can swap with LAC or HOU)
  • 1st-round pick (MIA, protected 1-14)
  • 1st-round pick (PHI, protected 1-6)
  • 2nd-round pick (ATL, only if 31-40)
  • 2nd-round pick (BOS or MEM, more favorable)
  • 2nd-round pick (PHI)

The Thunder have just a 1.7 percent chance of moving up to No. 1 in this year’s NBA Draft and will probably find themselves picking near the end of the lottery. Still, this is an extremely deep draft class and useful prospects like Cason Wallace and Nick Smith Jr. could absolutely fall into their range.

The 2024 NBA Draft is where the Thunder could really make a splash. They could have as many as four first-round picks that year, giving them plenty of assets to try and trade for a star or lots of opportunities to swing for a game-changing star, including Bronny James (who may come as a package deal with his dad, LeBron).
