At least one Georgia quarterback isn’t hitting transfer portal in 2023

It does not seem like former five-star quarterback Brock Vandagriff will be hitting the transfer portal after Georgia spring practice.

Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff sees the bigger picture, and is always willing to compete.

The son of a high school coach, the local product from Bogart may have to settle for at least one more year of riding pine in Athens. With Stetson Bennett IV having exhausted all of his eligibility, last year’s backup Carson Beck looked the part of the Week 1 starter for the Dawgs during G-Day. Fortunately for Dawg Nation, Vandagriff is not expected to put his name into the transfer portal.

Although the allure of potentially starting elsewhere is always captivating, Vandagriff is making the right decision for him and his team, as Georgia looks to pull off an unprecedented three-peat as College Football Playoff National Champions in 2023.

Let’s discuss why Vandagriff’s decision is 100 percent the right one and should be commended.

Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff not expected to enter transfer portal

I understand that Vandagriff has the talent to start pretty much everywhere else in the country, but there is so much more that goes into this. One, he grew up right down the road, so yes, there is sentimental attachment to Greater Athens and the University of Georgia. Two, he is one injury to Beck away from being able to start. Three, I think he is really enjoying being part of this UGA team.

Vandagriff may have been a blue-chipper coming out of high school, but level of comp was never in his favor. Frankly, the same thing can be said about rising sophomore Gunner Stockton, but that hasn’t stopped either of them competing their tails off for playing time with Beck now and with Bennett last year. In football terms, iron sharpens iron. Preparation is key in creating opportunities.

There are three other things at play here that make sense for Vandagriff to stay. The first is being told no and proving people wrong through a continuous growth process has become a staple of Georgia quarterback play in the Kirby Smart era. The second is this is a newish offense with Mike Bobo taking over for Todd Monken. Nothing is set in stone. Lastly, timing is everything in all this.

See, the ideal time to transfer for someone in Vandagriff’s situation would have been after the national title. It would have afforded him to enroll at another university, get reps in spring practice and be willing to compete for the starting job. There is just not enough runway to make that happen after G-Day. The other big key is maybe Vandagriff wants to graduate from Georgia first?

Yes, he still has the one free transfer to burn without penalty, but Vandagriff is smart and knows what he is doing. It hasn’t always been predictable in the Georgia quarterback room over the last several years, but maybe that’s just their style? Either way, it takes an entire team to win titles. The things we don’t see don’t go unnoticed. You have to appreciate the little things at all times.

There will be a time when Georgia will need Vandagriff to come through for them; he’ll be ready.
