Help may be on the way for Alabama with this transfer portal QB
By John Buhler
With news of Tyler Buchner entering the transfer portal, help could be on the way for the dire Alabama quarterback situation.
Tyler Buchner elected to enter the portal on Tuesday with the intention of possibly returning to Notre Dame if he doesn’t like his options. ESPN’s Pete Thamel outlined a handful of places he could go, namely TCU and Stanford, but we all know he has ties to new Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. With how spring practice went, Alabama may have real interest here.
Although Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson battled marvelously this spring, neither completed half of their passes during A-Day and combined to throw three interceptions. Alabama cannot be dog water at quarterback if Nick Saban wants to avoid a third straight season without winning a national title. He may be a youthful 70-something, but he is not going to be doing this forever.
Let’s discuss if Buchner is the answer to the Crimson Tide’s prayers at the quarterback position.
Notre Dame QB Tyler Buchner enters transfer portal with eyes on Alabama
Buchner was a well-thought-of four-star recruit coming out of his native California. Tabbed to be the Golden Domer’s next version of Ian Book, Buchner had his moments last season. But an injury, combined with Drew Pyne playing well and former Wake Forest starter Sam Hartman coming over certainly changed things. Buchner is good enough to start across the Power Five, but this the SEC.
I don’t think the stage will be too big for Buchner at Alabama. After all, he did play at Notre Dame, which is a national independent fishbowl Catholics and haters abound watching intently. Having a working rapport with Rees is a huge plus for him, something Milroe and Simpson could not say. However, I do think level of comp could be an issue for newcomer Buchner in the deep SEC West.
Overall, it serves Alabama to at least kick the tires on who enters the portal. If they like what they see in Buchner, then by all means, give him a scholarship! In his limited action with Notre Dame, he played with a confidence that led me to believe he will not wet his pants and be devoured by SEC linemen on the reg. I could be wrong, but I do like the idea of him possibly transferring to Alabama.
Buchner may ditch the gold for some crimson in an effort to help Saban win one last national title.
