The Cincinnati Reds revealed their City Connect jerseys on Saturday. With that in mind, when will they wear these new jerseys, and what do they mean?

On the surface, the Cincinnati Reds city connect jerseys look rather basic. The black and red jerseys aren’t all that complicated, and are meant to represent the future hope of the franchise while also paying homage to the past.

"“Just as Cincinnati, the birthplace of professional baseball, sparked the passion of America’s pastime, the Reds City Connect uniforms were developed to ignite the fire and pride in a NEW generation,” read the team’s official release. “Together, fueled by a collective energy, THIS city and THIS team are lighting the way to what comes NEXT.”"

Cincinnati pays homage to its baseball past in several tough-to-decipher ways on this jersey. First, the Buckeye leaf is meant to showcase their home state of Ohio. Meanwhile, the Cincy watermark on the front is new, and pays respect to the city itself, as well as the Juncta Juvant motto on the front.

"“There’s so much equity in our brand; we don’t change it often for good reason. So when you have an opportunity to extend the brand, it’s refreshing, it’s fun, and it’s something that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. It’s been a team effort; there are so many people that are making this happen. It’s really cool; I’m so geeked about the launch.”"

When will Reds wear their City Connect jerseys?

These new jerseys will make their debut on May 19 against the New York Yankees. They will be worn during every Friday home game for the rest of the 2023 season. Their usage beyond that will depend largely on the popularity among the fanbase, which has largely responded well to the concept.

So far, the Braves, Mariners, Rangers and now Reds have received City Connect designs. The Pirates and Orioles are next, though it’s unclear when those will be announced.
