Did you hear the US Open noise on the NBC broadcast? Golf fans are wondering what the background noise was on the broadcast of the 2023 US Open.

Golf fans were thrilled to watch the final round from the 2023 US Open at Los Angeles Country Club. Even with complaints about the course coming about from some fans and players, you can’t argue with the top of the leaderboard heading into Sunday with Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy, upstart Wyndham Clark, and Scottie Scheffler all heavily in contention.

Unfortunately, anyone tuning into NBC for the broadcast of the final round had their ears constantly accosted by some US Open noise, a persistent buzzing happening in the background at LACC throughout the entire day at the course.

That had fans wondering what exactly the US Open noise was going on in the background (and how in the world we could make it stop other than going to commercial break).

US Open noise: What is the background noise at the US Open?

While this isn’t wholly confirmed, a discussion with Kevin Van Valkenburg of No Laying Up on their Round 3 recap indicated that the US Open noise is a banner plane flying overhead at LACC with some sort of advertisement. Additionally, the NBC microphones are also catching any airplanes or helicopters that also fly over the course otherwise.

How in the world does one of the biggest broadcast networks in the world not figure out how to get this background noise out of their coverage, we’ll never know. But if you’re looking for an explanation for what the noise — or just hoping that you’re not the only one hearing it — that’s what we know about it.

Let’s just hope that plane can keep it down for the final stretch of the tournament.
