Ben Gravy hosted the Red Bull Foam Wreckers event this past weekend at Rockaway Beach in Queens, New York for the local surf community.

The surf community around the world as a whole knows how to have fun. From riding giants in Hawaii and Tahiti to riding small waves on the East Coast of the United States, it doesn’t matter to most surfers, all that matters is having a blast while doing it. That is the premise for the Red Bull Foam Wreckers contest. Dubbed an “anti-surf-contest surf contest,” Red Bull Foam Wreckers is open to all surfers, no matter what level you are at.

The brainchild of famed surfers Ben Gravy and Jamie O’Brien, this surf tour takes the fun of a surf contest to local breaks without the pressure. No real experience is necessary, people can get in the water on big, easier-to-ride foam boards and try their best at their local beaches. This past weekend the Foam Wreckers tour landed at Rockaway Beach in Queens, NY. Gravy was on hand to witness the marvel of getting people in the water and in some cases maybe catching their first wave.

“Red Bull Foam Wreckers was a blast this weekend!” Gravy told FanSided. “It was our first time bringing the competition to the Rockaways and the local surf community showed up and showed out, which was great to see, as we were able to witness some gnarly moves throughout the day. Huge congrats are in order for the winner, Wico Velez, he truly showed how talented the NYC surf community is.”

Red Bull Foam Wreckers visited Queens, New York for the first time

The surf scene in New York City is unlike any other. There are not many places around the world where you can ride the subway to the waves. Rockaway Beach is a mecca for NYC surfers. The local beaches are always full of passionate surfers often dressed in wetsuits due to the cold East Coast water. Over 100 local surfers showed up on Saturday to try their skills on the big foam board and they did not disappoint. The winner of the contest was Wico Velez. Ben Gibbs came in second place and Jason King came in third place.

Along with the fun in the water, attendees enjoyed themselves on the sand with an array of games and even some yoga. The Foam Wreckers tour is just getting started and will be hitting several more beaches this summer from Florida to New Jersey to California.
