Ranking all 14 head coach candidates, worst to best, the Falcons have interviewed
By John Buhler
4. Bill Belichick: Former New England Patriots head coach
We have arrived at the biggest name still out there. Bill Belichick wants to keep coaching. The Falcons are the only team who interviewed the greatest head coach of all time of New England Patriots lore. The Falcons interviewed him twice. I think Atlanta would win immediately under him, although I don't love him bringing Josh McDaniels with him as his offensive coordinator. McDaniels feels very toxic.
3. Raheem Morris: Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator
We have arrived at a man who expect will be a finalist for the job when all is said and done. Raheem Morris is ready for his next big opportunity. The Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator served as the Falcons' interim head coach in 2020 when Dan Quinn was ousted. He was a well-respected man in the building and a leader of men. If he can prune an offensive mind off Sean McVay's tree, go for it.
2. Jim Harbaugh: New Los Angeles Chargers head coach
Oh, look. It's Jim Harbaugh! Now that he is leading the Los Angeles Chargers, I can express how I really feel about what it would have been like to have this Michigan man leading the Dirty Birds. Atlanta would have won quickly, possibly getting back to the Super Bowl by 2026. However, I don't see him having staying power at anywhere besides his Michigan for long because of his personality.
1. Ben Johnson: Detroit Lions offensive coordinator
We have arrived at the best coaching candidate in this cycle. Falcons owner Arthur Blank has hired five straight head coaches who never served in that role in the NFL before dating back to Jim Mora Jr. replacing the late, great Dan Reeves. So let's make it half-a-dozen! Ben Johnson was last year's Bobby Slowik, a brilliant offensive mind, but too ripe for the picking. Don't let him die ripe on the vine.
I would venture to guess that Atlanta will have hired its next head coach by this time next week.
