The Miami Dolphins hosted the Kansas City Chiefs today at Sun Life Stadium in sweltering South Florida as both teams looked to rebound from losses last week. In the end, the Chiefs won their first game of the season led by a strong game from Alex Smith, downing the Dolphins 34-15 in their home stadium.

Alex Smith had a wonderful day for the Chiefs, throwing for three touchdowns on 19 for 25 passing and 186 yards. Smith was pressured the whole day, and did give up a safety, but overall managed the Chiefs en route to victory. Ryan Tannehill on the other hand struggled for the Dolphins, completing a meager 48 percent of his passes and missing on several throws throughout the game.

The Dolphins star of the game was undoubtedly running back Lamar Miller, who took the majority of the workload with Knowshon Moreno out with an elbow injury. Miller finished the game with 15 carries for 108 yards, including several big runs throughout.

The game started with an electric 40-yard return from rookie Jarvis Landry. The Dolphins offense got a first down, but a Dontari Poe sacked stalled the drive and they were forced to punt. The Dolphins special teams stepped up big, pinning the Chiefs at their own two yard line. After a first down and 15-yard penalty on the Dolphins, the Chiefs were driving before a fumble nearly cost them the ball. The fumble essentially erased the Dolphins 15-yard penalty, and the Chiefs were in a deep hole with second and 30 to go. Two plays later, the Chiefs were forced to punt and ended up pinning the Dolphins deep in their own territory as Jarvis Landry made a huge error in trying to field the punt at the 1-yard line instead of letting it trickle into the endzone for a touchback.

On the first play of the Dolphins drive, the offensive line opened up a huge hole for Lamar Miller to scurry for 17 yards. The next two plays saw drops by Mike Wallace and Jarvis Landry, but Tannehill hit Brian Hartline for a first down on a critical third down. After a holding penalty erased another impressive run from Lamar Miller, the Dolphins offense was unable to get back in a rhythm and were forced to punt.

On the ensuing Chiefs drive, Derrick Shelby sacked Alex Smith for a loss of five yards. After a drop by Travis Kelce, the Chiefs let up another sack, this time to Olivier Vernon, and the team was forced to punt. On the Dolphins next drive, Mike Wallace took an end around for 12 yards on the first play of the series. On a third down a few plays later, Brian Hartline was unable to pull in what would have been a first down catch as Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith made an excellent defensive play.

On the Chiefs next drive, Alex Smith and the offense could not get anything together for three plays, but did convert a 4th and 1 on the first play of the second quarter that kept the drive alive. Three plays later on third down, the Dolphins defense got to Alex Smith again and forced them to punt.

On first down, Ryan Tannehill and Mike Wallace connected for a 30-yard pass after Wallace made a great effort to gain yards after the catch. Wallace and Tannehill connected again on the ensuing play, going for yet another first down. After a Brandon Gibson drop, and subsequent catch on the next play that was two yards short of the first down, Caleb Sturgis missed a 40-yard field goal that gave the Chiefs solid field position.

Alex Smith and Dwayne Bowe connected for a 16-yard pass on the following drive. The Chiefs continued their march down the field with a good mix of run and pass plays. The 6 play, 62 yard drive was capped off by a beautiful 21-yard touchdown run by Knile Davis that saw him juke and jive multiple Dolphins defenders, giving the Chiefs the 7-0 lead with about 7 minutes to go in the half.

The Dolphins knew they needed an answer on their following drive, and Lamar Miller answered the call with another great 20 yard burst up the gut. Two plays later, Ryan Tannehill was sacked by Tamba Hali who forced a fumble, but Tannehill recovered it. On third-and-17 the Dolphins were unable to convert, and they were forced to punt yet again.

With the Chiefs in the lead, Alex Smith connected on a 26 yard pass with Joe McKnight to put them in Dolphins territory. On a critical 3rd-and-3, Knile Davis took a pitch for 11 yards and a first down with under two minutes to go in the half. A few plays later, Travis Kelce capped off the 8-play, 76-yard drive by taking a short pass for 20 yards to pay dirt, giving the Chiefs the 14-0 lead.

With 1:30 left in the half, the Dolphins offense took the field hoping to put some points on the board. On the first play of the drive, Tannehill connected with Lamar Miller for a 15-yard gain. The Dolphins offense continued to move down the field with successful passes to Mike Wallace and Daniel Thomas on a 21-yard screen. With 12 seconds left in the half, Ryan Tannehill rushed for nine yards, but was short of the goal line. The Dolphins called a timeout with two seconds to go, and opted to take the three points as Caleb Sturgis hit the 22-yard field goal to cut the Chiefs lead to 14-3.

On the first drive of the second half, the Dolphins defense stepped up huge by causing Alex Smith to fumble, giving the offense great field position at the 19-yard line. On third down and goal, Ryan Tannehill took the bootleg and found Brian Hartline in the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown.

On the Chiefs ensuing drive, Alex Smith began to drive his team down the field as the Dolphins defense sputtered time and again. The highlight play of the drive came on a 17-yard Knile Davis run that gashed the Dolphins defense and put the Chiefs in the red zone. A few plays later, Alex Smith connected with Joe McKnight for an 11-yard touchdown to cap off the 10-play 66-yard drive.

On the kickoff, Jarvis Landry bursted through the middle for a 74-yard return, giving the Dolphins great field position. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the offense was unable to capitalize, and were forced to settle for a 51-yard field goal. With 6 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, the Dolphins trailed 21-13.

The Chiefs were called for a block in the back on the kickoff return, negating a nice run back from Joe McKnight and putting the offense deep in their own territory. A few plays later, the Chiefs were forced to punt the ball back to the Dolphins.

The first play was not a good one for the Dolphins, as they lost 8 yards on a short pass to Lamar Miller. The very next play, however, Tannehill connected with Wallace for a 14-yard gain to set up a manageable third and short. The Chiefs defense held strong and forced the Dolphins to punt.

Another illegal block in the back negated yet another big return for the Chiefs, and forced them deep into their own territory once again. The Dolphins defense capitalized as Jelani Jenkins sacked Alex Smith in the endzone for a safety cutting the lead to only 6 with 2:40 left in the third quarter.

On the first play of the Dolphins drive, Lamar Miller busted out a 24-yard run with daylight in front of him. The Dolphins could not keep the momentum going however, as a few plays later they were forced to punt, pinning the Chiefs deep in their own territory once again. The Chiefs were able to get a first down, but the drive stalled soon afterwards as the Chiefs were forced to punt again.

The Dolphins offense stumbled once again, failing to convert a 3rd-and-1, which forced Brandon Fields to punt. The Chiefs returned the punt from the 1-yard line, but ended up gaining 47 yards and a Dolphins 5-yard penalty for illegal substitution. The Chiefs utilized the excellent field position, putting together several impressive plays before Alex Smith connected with Joe McKnight for a 4-yard touchdown. The Chiefs went for a two-point conversion, but were unable to convert. With 4:35 to go in the game, the Dolphins trailed the Chiefs 27-15.

Down two scores, the Dolphins took the field with just over 4 minutes to go. Although they moved the ball down the field on several plays, a holding penalty cost the Dolphins a first down. On 4th-and-20, Allen Bailey of the Chiefs batted down Ryan Tannehill’s attempted pass, essentially putting the nail in the coffin for the Dolphins.

The Chiefs actually fumbled on their ensuing possession, giving the Dolphins a slim chance to make a monumental comeback. Ultimately, the Dolphins failed to convert a 4th-and-1, which was truly the final chance for the Dolphins offense. The Chiefs took over on downs, and actually scored once again on a Cyrus Gray 6-yard touchdown run.

With the win, the Chiefs improve to 1-2, and the Dolphins fall to 1-2 after losing two straight. The Dolphins head to London next weekend to take on the Oakland Raiders, where they will need a victory in order to salvage their season. The Chiefs take their momentum back home next weekend where they will take on the New England Patriots and Tom Brady.
