Minnesota Twins pitcher Phil Hughes was pulled from the team’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday afternoon, following a 66 minute rain delay.

More from Minnesota Twins

While the Minnesota Twins won the game, the rain delay cost Hughes a lot of money.

Had the weather not forced the Twins and Diamondbacks to take the break from action, Hughes would have likely remained in the game for another 1/3 of an inning.

Instead, Hughes left the game and finished with 209 2/3 innings pitched this season — a career high.

Why is that significant?

Well, had Hughes pitched that extra 1/3 of an inning, it would have triggered a $500,000 bonus that he was set to get had he reached 210 innings on the season. Unfortunately for Hughes, that one he was unable to get was a costly one.

You know what they say: when it rains, it pours.
