Jay Cutler wanted to be a member of Washington Redskins
Jay Cutler, starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears, was almost a member of the Washington Redskins back in 2009 when he was being moved from the Denver Broncos. According to the interview on ESPN 1000’s “The Jay Cutler Show,” looking behind the scenes of Cutler’s career, Cutler confirmed that he expected to go to Washington as he already knew Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was headed there.

It was a CBS Sports report by Jason La Canfora that outlined the 2009 year when Cutler was being traded. The report included a quote from Vinnny Cerato, Washington’s VP of Football Operations in that year.
“Jay Cutler wanted to come because he figured Shanahan was coming anyhow, and so he wanted to come, too. And for the agent and everybody, it would have been a very smooth transition.”
As Jason Campbell struggled in Washington, the Redskins began to look for more talent, especially Cutler.
The deal ended up not going through, as the Bears snatched up Cutler with first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, a third-round pick in 2009, and former quarterback Kyle Orton. They received a fifth-round pick in the deal.
Cutler recalled the day he went to the Bears on the ESPN 100 special:
“Earlier in the day, I remember Bus [Cutler’s agent] calling and saying it was pretty close,” Cutler recalled. “But I didn’t know Shanny was gonna go there at the time. Then, Bus called me back, I think at 3 [p.m.], [and he’s like], ‘It’s off the table. They couldn’t find a third team to compete the trade.’ Then, he called me back at 5 [p.m.], and was like, ‘Chicago. If you’re in with Chicago, we’re doing it.’ I’m like, ‘I’m all in, let’s go.'”
And there is the story on how Jay Cutler became a quarterback for the Chicago Bears, almost going to the Washington Redskins. He’s been with the team since 2009, leading the Bears to the playoffs in 2010. Cutler signed a seven-year extension in January.
