Cleveland Indians outfielder Michael Brantley hit a foul ball directly into the railing, where it got stuck.

Baseball is a sport that has been around for more than 150 years. Yet something happened yesterday that may be unprecedented in the sport’s long history: a foul ball being hit directly into the railing, and staying there.

How Cleveland Indians outfielder Michael Brantley managed to wedge this ball perfectly in the railing is a question that we may never be able to answer. Here’s the video of the event itself:

It seems impossible, but it happened. Here’s a close-up photo from the Indians’ Twitter account:

Has this feat ever been achieved in baseball history? A cursory Google search yielded no information, so we may be looking at history here. Certainly Brantley could never do that again. You could give him (or any other hitter) a million attempts off a pitching machine and they could never make that happen.

OK, so maybe it has no real significance to the sport. But these kinds of crazy little things are what makes baseball so special. We watch it for dominating pitchers and home runs; but we also watch it for foul balls getting stuck in the railing, bat flips, and, of course, everything Bartolo Colon does.
