40-year-old pitcher Bartolo Colon legged out an infield hit on Wednesday evening, which shocked everyone, himself included.

Bartolo Colon of the New York Mets is known for his thick frame, studly frame and less than ideal athleticism, especially at the advanced age in baseball terms of 40. So count anyone surprised, including Colon himself, he was able to leg out an infield hit Wednesday night at home against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Of course, the whole “legged it out” thing is a bit overstated. Colon never got to top speed, or maybe he did, and he’s just that slow. Watch for yourself, and laugh away, if you feel led.

The 5’11”, 285 lbs. pitcher came in as a career .075 hitter whose had 13 career hits–only of which was for extra bases. So not a great hitter this Colon guy.

Fascinating it is Colon’s swing and gait out of the box makes him look much more like a guy playing beer league softball with his friends than a Major League Baseball player.

In fairness to the former Cy Young award winner, he’s spent the majority of his career in the American League, so at 40-years-old it’s been a while since he was ever asked to regularly contribute offensively.

Still it’s hilarious to watch Colon hit, or really do anything other than throw his devastating two-seam fastball.
