Uruguay was shockingly upset by Costa Rica, but were without striker Luis Suarez who was still recovering from an injury. In the 31st minute, England almost got on the board first. A Steven Gerrard free kick curled towards the back post and forward Wayne Rooney was able to get a head on it from basically point blank range.
The ball went off Rooney’s head and hit the post in the corner. Minutes later, Suarez was able to break through and give his team the lead.
A cross from Edinson Cavani found Luis Suarez on the back side of the box and he was able to put his forehead on it driving the ball into the back of the net. Just like that, England were down and it looked like Rooney was about to become the scapegoat once again.
In the second half, the English team looked to level the game and get themselves back in the game. Ultimately, Rooney stepped up for England in the 75th minute. A low pass across the box found Rooney near the back post and he was able to tap it in to tie the game.

Just like that, the Manchester United forward became a hero and got a giant monkey off his back. His club team’s rival’s striker, Liverpool’s Luis Suarez wasn’t done yet. In the 84th minute, England captain Steven Gerrard was beaten to a header, and the ball flung back to an open Suarez.
He took the ball into the box and rifled it into the top shelf of the goal to give Uruguay the lead again. It was a remarkably beautiful strike that Joe Hart had little chance of stopping and seemingly took the wind out of England’s sails and stripped them of any momentum they built up.
