The first match ups of the Round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup have been set and it pits Mexico against the Netherlands. That means Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez facing off against Manchester United striker Robin van Persie.

That is an intriguing storyline because Hernandez has suffered a bit of downward turn in his career because he struggles to get on the pitch. United is crowded at the forward position with Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Hernandez himself. His lack of playing time could be part of the reason he is being used as a “super-sub” for Mexico instead of starting.
“It will be a joy,” Hernandez said, via Sky Sports. “He is a team-mate with whom I’ve experienced two important years.
“I’ve learned a lot from him, we won a title and it will be very nice to see him again.”
I think Hernandez will make it a point to try to outshine Van Persie, which won’t necessarily be easy. In part to create more playing time for him at the club or to generate enough interest for a loan or transfer.
Hernandez was able to get a goal in the win over Croatia, one that secured their spot in the knockout rounds.
“This is a goal that gives me a lot of confidence,” Hernandez said. “But I’m never going to feel pressured by anything. I don’t live off goals.
“I live off enjoying myself, off the confidence I have in myself and something that many people, throughout this year, have not had in me.
“I feel I’m on the right path and I want to continue like this. I had three very good years with the national team and then one year in which I did not play for my club and I ended up on the bench.
“We are going to enjoy this win, it was a huge step forward. We are very humble and respectful. We will think of Holland next. One must focus on the present and take it one game at a time.”
