Against the Netherlands in the third place game, Brazil was looking to restore some pride.
“I know my career will be marked by this defeat, but we have an obligation to move on and think about the next goal, which in this case is the match for third place on Saturday in Brasilia,” Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said, via FIFA.com.
“I know it’s a much smaller dream that we all wanted, but we have to honour the shirt of the national team.”
Things seemed to pick up right where they left off in that fateful game, the Brazilians giving up goals to their opponents. A couple of minutes into the game captain and center-back Thiago Silva, who missed the game against Germany while serving a yellow card suspension, gave up a penalty to Dutch winger Arjen Robben who had beaten him and was headed in on goal.
The referee awarded the penalty and gave Silva a yellow card and quite frankly he was lucky he wasn’t given a straight red card.
Dutch captain Robin van Persie went to the spot to take the kick, scoring and giving the Netherlands a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game.
About 13 minutes later, the Netherlands added another goal and this one also came off of a Brazilian miscue. A Dutch cross into the box found a cluster of Brazilian defenders along the back post and no real Dutch threat in sight. A Brazilian defender tried to head the ball away from the goal, which happened to be the top of the box straight on to the goal.
The ball found a wide open Daley Blind who had time to bring the ball down, take a touch and boot it in on goal. Just like that, Brazil was down 2-0 in the first 16 minutes of the game and it looked like it was going to be a rough game again.
Late in the first half Dirk Kuyt of the Netherlands banged his head with a Brazilian player’s elbow and got staples on the side of the field during the game.
Brazil was able to stop the bleeding and hang on to the 2-0 scoreline heading into the break.
While they stopped the Netherlands from scoring, they couldn’t get back into the game. The second half was a pretty uneventful and boring with the exception of Hulk booting a ball into the stands until the final minutes of the second half.
Netherlands added a third goal from Georginio Wijnaldum to make the win all the more convincing and the loss all the more embarrassing for Brazil.
The fans started to boo at the end of the game as the final whistle blew.
