Steve Nash rumors: Lakers PG will retire at season end

The Los Angeles Lakers had the option to use the stretch provision on Steve Nash this season which would have resulted in the point guard being released and his contract spread out over the course of the next two seasons.

However, after striking out in free agency the Lakers decided they will keep Steve Nash for the 2014-15 season, which will be the last for the two-time NBA MVP. That’s the word from Steve Nash himself, who confirmed that he plans to retire at season end.
“I think this is my last season,” said the 40-year-old Nash in a video posted by Sport TV. But I still love to play, practice and work on my game. I’m going to spend hopefully many many years living this life without basketball. It’ll be nice to play one more year.”
Nash, who was acquired by the Los Angeles Lakers prior to the 2012-13 season hasn’t been much of an asset in Hollywood given his declining health and age, but during his days with the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks the former Santa Clara product was among the elites in the game.
With Jeremy Lin now entrenched as the Lakers starting point guard, Steve Nash will be regulated to bench duty though he’ll likely be happy to contribute at all given he’s only played in 15 games since the 2012-13 season.
When Steve Nash does hang up his sneakers at season end, he’ll have played 19 seasons in the NBA. The Toronto Raptors have previously stated having an interest in giving Nash a front office job when he does retire.
