As we speak, the most likely scenario involves Steve Nash playing NBA basketball this coming season. There have been rumors suggesting that the Los Angeles Lakers could use their stretch provision on Nash which would allow the team to release him and pay his remaining salary over the course a few years, but the Lakers have hinted such a move won’t be taking place.

More from NBA

If Steve Nash isn’t released, he’ll enter the final year of his contract with the Lakers and after that, it’s not known what the Canadian born point guard plans to do. He may continue his attempts to play, but with nagging back injuries, that seems rather unlikely and it’s very possible we may be seeing the final year of a brilliant career.

However, Nash’s relationship with the NBA may not end when he hangs up his sneakers as Tim Leiweke, CEO of the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment hopes that Nash will eventually be able to join the Toronto Raptors organization as he told USA Today’s Jeff Zillgitt.

“There are probably few people who admire and like Steve Nash like I do. I had the privilege of getting to know him when he came to the Lakers. I love Steve Nash. I hope whenever his career ends, and I hope it’s not today, I hope a great player like that gets to go out on a high. That said, I definitely would hope there’s day in time where Steve Nash is playing a role here somehow.”

There was no suggestion on how the Raptors would like to use Steve Nash, but just having him be part of the organization would be a step in the right direction.
