The rumor mill has hinted that the Timberwolves, wanting to win now, are open to the idea of trading Anthony Bennett to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for forward Thaddeus Young. It’s a clear current talent upgrade, but what about for the long haul?
While the Timberwolves are said to desire NBA-ready talent, they’re going to have to wait a few seasons for Andrew Wiggins to mature. Given that, it would seem to be most logical that the TWolves attempt to go into a true rebuild mode and collect young assets with potentially high ceilings.
Given that, Nate Duncan believes the Timberwolves would prefer Anthony Bennett to Thaddeus Young in a rebuild scenario.
"But in a larger franchise building sense, I see little reason they prefer Young over Anthony Bennett in a clear rebuilding situation."
Of course, it’s difficult to tell just what the Minnesota Timberwolves want to do. It doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense to add ready-to-win veteran talent around Andrew Wiggins, but it’s not as if Thaddeus Young is old by any stretch either.
It’s also possible that the T’Wolves see Thaddeus Young as a more valuable player and feel he could also potentially bring back more value in a trade scenario, so they’d essentially be ‘upgrading’.
We’ll certainly find out just how much the Timberwolves value Bennett or potentially Young in the next few days most likely.
