When the Cleveland Cavaliers decided to select Anthony Bennett with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, most were in shock.

More from Minnesota Timberwolves

It wasn’t that Bennett wasn’t deserving of a high selection, it was just few believed he was worth of the top overall pick. Regardless, the Cavaliers stuck by their decision and Bennett quickly turned in one of the most woeful rookie seasons in NBA history.

That lead to Bennett (along with Andrew Wiggins) being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves this offseason. It couldn’t be a better situation for the former UNLV star who says he’s excited for the breath of fresh air.

He isn’t the only one as Bennett looked in much better shape during the NBA’s Summer League and the Minnesota Timberwolves believe the center/forward may have resolved many of the issues that plagued him during his rookie season with the Cavs.

In addition to the loss of weight, Anthony Bennett (who often appeared winded during extended minutes) says he underwent surgery to correct his sleep apnea which has improved his respiratory issues. Bennett stated a new ‘free mind’ was able to help him play well during Summer League and he seems ready to deliver on his draft stock.

Will he be able to do so? That remains to be seen, though the Timberwolves feel he’s better suited (at least currently) to handle the power forward position which is where he’ll spend the vast majority of his time early in the season.

Should be interesting to see if Anthony Bennett can play up to his ability level and if the offseason changes have improved his game.
