That cruel twist of fate appears to have sealed the American League Wild Card race, as the Mariners have now lost four straight games and have to make up 3.0 games in the standings in five days. That’s not impossible, but they need a meltdown from either the Kansas City Royals or the Oakland Athletics if that is going to happen.
The Royals have put themselves in a solid position thanks to a three game winning streak; they now technically hold the top Wild Card spot over the A’s and are just one game back of the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. In the process they squashed any hopes that the Cleveland Indians might have of pull off a late season run.
Here are the updated American League Wild Card standings:
- Kansas City Royals – 86-71, — WCGB
- Oakland Athletics – 86-71, — WCGB
- Seattle Mariners – 83-74, 3.0WCGB
- Cleveland Indians – 82-76, 4.5 WCGB
- New York Yankees – 81-76, 5.0 WCGB
After losing to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night, the Yankees need either the Royals or Athletics to lose out while they win out to even have hopes of forcing a one-game playoff. Pending that unlikely scenario, they will be left spending the remaining days of the regular season finding new ways to honor Derek Jeter and enjoying the hilarious signs that elderly women make for him.
