Sounds like fans in Ohio might want to put their money together and send a gift basket to the San Antonio Spurs as they’re the reason LeBron James left the Miami Heat in free agency and decided to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Okay, maybe the Spurs aren’t the reason though they certainly played a role in James’ departure from South Beach.

The NBA superstar, sitting down for an interview with CNN (via the Sun Sentential) stated that he likely would have re-signed with the Miami Heat had they defeated the Spurs in the 2013-14 NBA Finals.

"In the interview with Rachel Nichols for the network’s Unguarded program that airs Fridays at 10:30 p.m., James said a third consecutive Heat championship likely would have preempted his eventual return to Cleveland. The Heat instead lost 4-1 in the NBA Finals to the San Antonio Spurs."

LeBron James seems to be somebody extremely concerned with his legacy and being in position to 4-peat would have been something only a few had ever been given the chance to do. Nobody had succeeded and it’s within reason to believe that the Miami Heat and LeBron James very well could have been in position for that fourth consecutive ring had they knocked out the San Antonio Spurs.

Alas, that’s not what happened and James decided to leave South Beach and return to his former stomping grounds with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Funny how the course of the NBA changed all because of one playoff series.
