With just days until their October 1st deadline was to pass, the Phoenix Suns and Eric Bledsoe finally agreed upon a new contract. The five-year, $70 million dollar deal shocked many though apparently not Bledsoe who held out for the hefty deal all summer.

Now fully invested in the former Kentucky talent, the Phoenix Suns have no worries about the health of Eric Bledsoe who has proven himself to be a bit of an injury risk during his short NBA career.

“We would not have made this commitment in terms of years or money if we had significant concerns about Eric’s health,” Suns general manager Ryan McDonough said. “Nobody knows Eric’s medical history or where he’s at better than us.”

The $70 million dollar commitment is an obvious statement regarding the Suns’ outlook on Eric Bledsoe’s health, though it does seem to be a bit riskier than committing to your average player. That’s not to say Eric Bledsoe will continue to be plagued with injury but given his prior history, committing that type of coin does come with some worry.

“We think we’re signing Eric for his best years,” said McDonough, admitting the process took far longer than desired. “He’s just coming into his prime. If Eric is healthy and continues to improve at the rate he has, this will be a good contract for both sides.”

If he’s healthy? Given the guaranteed nature of NBA contacts, the Phoenix Suns better hope he doesn’t prove himself to be a player who has continued injury problems.

As McDonough said though, when he’s healthy, Eric Bledsoe is one hell of a player.
