Washington Nationals’ Jordan Zimmermann no-hits Marlins
By Phil Watson
Right-hander Jordan Zimmermann of the Washington Nationals made it two straight seasons with a no-hitter on the season’s final day, blanking the Miami Marlins 1-0 at Nationals Park on Sunday.
His final start of the regular season was pushed back a couple of days because of shoulder soreness and the extra rest seems to suit Zimmerman just fine.
Zimmermann (14-5) faced just one batter over the minimum. He walked Justin Bour with two outs in the fifth inning—the only Miami baserunner of the day.
The no-hitter wasn’t without drama. Christian Yelich got hold of a fastball from Zimmerman with two outs in the ninth and hit a slicing drive to deep left field.
Rookie Steven Souza, who entered the game in the top of the ninth for defensive purposes to replace Ryan Zimmerman in left field, went back on the ball and made a tremendous diving catch to preserve Zimmermann’s gem.
So, big thumbs-up to manager Matt Williams for that decision.

Zimmermann threw 104 pitches on the day, 79 of them for strikes, and fanned 10 hitters.
Coincidentally, the losing pitcher was right-hander Henderson Alvarez, who no-hit the Detroit Tigers 1-0 on the final day of the 2013 season.
Alvarez (12-7) gave up the game’s only run on Ian Desmond’s solo home run in the bottom of the second. Alvarez had far from no-hit stuff, though, as he allowed 11 hits in seven innings.
It is the first no-hitter for the team since it moved to Washington in 2005. The franchise’s last no-hitter was a perfect game thrown by Dennis Martinez for the Montreal Expos against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 28, 1991.
