One of the most tragic situations to ever hit the NFL is starting to slowly get explained to the world some two years after it happened. In December 2012, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher murdered his girlfriend at their home before driving to Arrowhead Stadium to commit suicide.

The tragedy shook the NFL and society to its core as nothing like this had happened before. Answers as to why this tragedy happened haven’t been known since Belcher’s death, but a wrongful death lawsuit being brought on behalf of his daughter and deceased girlfriend is starting to provide some.

According to the Kansas City Star, Belcher was showing signs of CTE at the time he was involved in a murder-suicide back in 2012.

"A post-mortem analysis of Jovan Belcher’s brain found the 25-year-old linebacker was likely suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, The Star has learned."

Head injuries in the NFL aren’t the hot topic it once was, as you couldn’t throw a stone two feet in 2012 and 2013 without hitting CTE being mentioned somewhere. But Belcher showing signs of the brain disease at such an early age and showing such aggressive and brutal symptoms so early on goes to show that CTE is still a serious problem and we have basically no clue as to how devastating it can be and when that devastation can ravage a man’s mind with terrible repercussions.
