It’s safe to say that LeBron James and Mike Miller are good friends. Given that, it was a bit odd the Miami Heat decided to use their amnesty clause on the veteran swingman but that’s exactly what they did after the 2012-13 season.

More from LeBron James

While the move saved the Miami Heat a significant amount of money (mostly because they were over the luxury tax), it didn’t sit well with LeBron James. That’s the word from David Aldridge who says the move wasn’t the lone reason LeBron James decided to leave the Miami Heat and sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but it certainly played a role.

"Miller was also a key hinge in James’ decision to bolt South Beach. His absence, which came after the Heat opted to amnesty him after the 2012-13 season and reap some financial savings, created a roster imbalance for Miami last season. More ominously for the Heat, James was irked that a key member of the title teams — and one of his closer friends on the team — was jettisoned. Again: It’s not why James left. But it didn’t help."

Mike Miller of course decided to fellow LeBron James to the Cavs where the two are now teammates yet again.

It’s hard to begrudge the Miami Heat for making such a move considering the amount of money it saved them. More importantly, LeBron James should have been aware of the financial impact but perhaps he simply didn’t care and felt the Heat should have kept Miller regardless.
