For this installment of the September rundowns, we will cover the underachievers from the first month. There were many, trust me!

1. Michigan: Has any team struggled more than the Wolverines? They weren’t supposed to be much more than a speed bump to Michigan State and Ohio State in the Big Ten(14) East, but this is ridiculous! They were blanked at home by Notre Dame. Then Utah punished them at home. Then Minnesota ran them into their home turf. Brady Hoke seems to have lost the team, and it is a shame because he is a good coach and a likeable guy. He just isn’t the right fit for the Wolverines. To make matters worse, his predecessor, Rich Rodriguez, is having great success in the desert at Arizona.

2. North Carolina: This team had enough potential to be ranked in the preseason, but their defense has let them down. They have given up 176 points in four games, and 120 in the last two. I don’t care how good your offense is, you will have a hard time keeping up if your defense is giving up that much.

3. SMU: The June Jones run-and-shoot was supposed to be kicking into high gear this year. Instead, the offense sputtered and the defense was atricous, resulting in Jones being shown the door. The Mustangs finally made a bowl game for the first time since the Death Penalty was imposed in 2012, and seemed to be heading in the right direction. Now they have no direction. In fact, the offense scored just 12 points in the entire month of September!

4. Pittsburgh: They have plenty of talent in RB James Conner and WR Tyler Boyd, but QB Chad Voytik is only completing 55% of his passes, and the offense stalls out more often than it makes big plays. A lot of that can be overcome, but they land here on the heels of a loss to Akron. The Zips hadn’t beaten a power five school since 2008.

5. Northwestern: They are just 3-9 since the GameDay visit last year. Their defense has not looked great, and the offense has struggled. If they hadn’t beaten Penn State in their final September game, they would likely be higher up this list!

Dishonorable mention: Colorado, Texas Tech, Boise State, Florida, South Carolina
