It’s been 29 years since the Kansas City Royals played in a World Series and with just three more victories against the Baltimore Orioles, that streak will come to an end.

More from Kansas City Royals

The promising play hasn’t only been welcomed in the heart of Royals faithfuls but also baseball fans across the country, one of which who stole a banner from the 1985 World Series belonging to the Kansas City Royals.

A ‘bunting’, the banner hung over a railing at the Royals ballpark though was swiped by a Wiscoinson man who just so happened to attend the game. Now nearly three decades later, the man admitted that he took it and happily gave it back to the Kansas City Royals where it can sit alongside a similar version currently enshrined in the Royals Hall of Fame.

“Its home should be in Kansas City and not Wisconsin,” Kuehl wrote to the Royals last week after packaging the banner in a box addressed to Kauffman Stadium. “Furthermore, I would like to make restitution for my crime.”

In addition to mailing the banner back the man also included a $250 dollar check, though I’m guessing the Kansas City Royals could have done without that even though he suggested the money should go to charity.

Regardless it’s a very nice gesture as the Royals obviously would love to have part of their history, even if they’re looking to write a new chapter this year.

"The “borrowed” bunting, if a bit yellowed, matches the banner from the same series displayed at the Royals Hall of Fame. The hall’s director, Curt Nelson, is considering making space for the returned artifact, along with Kuehl’s letter of remorse, should the Royals reach the 2014 World Series."

Royals fans are hoping this can go alongside a new banner to be displayed in their Hall of Fame after the season.
