Wouldn’t it be nice if your employer decided to give you half a million dollars just to watch your weight?

Sounds a bit outlandish, yes, but when your employer is the San Antonio Spurs and your job is centered around physical fitness, it’s something that actually happens. Case in point, the contract signed between Boris Diaw and the aforementioned Spurs which will pay the power forward/center up to a half million dollars if he’s to keep his weight under 255 pounds this season.
ESPN‘s Amin Elhassan looked through some of the stranger contractual clauses in the NBA this season and noticed the weight stipulation in Boris Diaw’s contract.
"Diaw’s deal features $500,000 in annual performance bonuses in the form of a weight clause. Each season, he gets:• $150,000 for weighing less than or equal to 254 pounds on Oct. 25• $150,000 for weighing less than or equal to 254 pounds on the first Tuesday after the All-Star Game• $200,000 for weighing less than or equal to 254 pounds on April 1"
This of course isn’t the first nor the last weight clause contract we’ve seen though it certainly is one of the more lucrative. Of course, that may be due to the fact that Boris Diaw has been known to inflate quicker than a balloon so the San Antonio Spurs want to make sure the big man stays in prime playing shape.
One person who seems adamant about keeping Diaw looking svelte (har, har) is San Antonio Spurs head coach Greg Popovich. The veteran coach has already been trolling his big man about his weight though for what it’s worth, Diaw seems ready to keep the pounds off as he’s been jokingly tweeting Popovich that he’s not adding on any weight.
