The San Antonio Spurs haven’t even played a game this season and head coach Gregg Popovich is already trolling. His first victim? Backup ‘big man’ (in the truest sense of the word), Boris Diaw.

More from NBA

While Diaw proved himself to be a very important piece to the San Antonio Spurs’ title run, that hasn’t allowed him to escape the wrath of Gregg Popovich who decided to take a swipe at the power forward/center on Friday afternoon.

During media day, Pop suggested that he and his coaches have a betting pool regarding Boris Diaw’s weight for the upcoming season.

Ouch. Popovich was of course joking (sort of) though he has a unique sense of gruffness that he’ll employ in hopes of motivating a player. Was that on display here? It’s possible though Diaw’s weight has been somewhat of an issue for Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs in the past, so it’s likely the head coach just making sure Diaw keeps the pounds off.

The hefty Diaw clocked in at 250lbs last season when weight measurement were taken though has at times ballooned upwards of nearly 300lbs during his career. Maybe Pop will throw him out there a few more minutes this season in effort to drop some pounds while giving Tim Duncan an extra breather or two.
