According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Cleveland Browns have not expressed any interest in negotiating a contract extension with their current starting quarterback, Brian Hoyer.
This news comes in light of Cleveland’s relatively smooth start to the 2014 NFL season. The team currently stands at 3-2, and has been competitive in virtually every game it has played this year.

The Browns are in third place in the wide open AFC North division. And while Hoyer did not exactly look great in his last performance, his team still rallied behind him to rout the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday 31-10. Overall, on the season, Hoyer’s numbers (with ranks) are as follows.
Passer Rating: 99.5 (8th)
Total QBR (ESPN): 75.4 (7th)
Passing TD: 7 (T-20th)
Passing Yards: 1,224 (21st)
Passing YPG: 245 (19th)
Completion %: 60.4 (27th)
While he might not be producing the most prolific stat line, his efficiency has resulted in just 1 lone interception on the season. His decision making, along with the team’s formidable defense, has been credited with keeping the games close. We also cannot understate the significance of WR Josh Gordon’s absence in the passing game. Once he rejoins the team in the second half of the season, Hoyer’s numbers are likely to see a boost, assuming the former’s production does not suffer from inactivity.
Despite early-season #Browns success and Brian Hoyer's contribution to it, team has shown "zero'' interest in negotiating extension so far
— Ed Werder (@WerderEdESPN) October 14, 2014
Could this be an indication that the Browns plan to move forward next season with Johnny Manziel under center? Perhaps, but with more than half a season left in front of us, it might be too early to tell. One thing remains certain though. All indications are that Hoyer wants to be a starter wherever he plays. If the Browns are not that team, there are plenty of other options for him.
