The experiment that was Chivas USA has finally had the plug pulled as the franchise is no longer after a decade long run.

Major League Soccer made the announcement on Monday morning though that doesn’t mean the league is completely abandoning the idea of a second team in Southern California. Not at all in fact as MLS stated they will be bringing back a new club to Los Angeles via expansion come the 2017 season as noted by Sports Illustrated.

"MLS plans to announce plans for LA2 on Thursday. As reported last month by SI.com, the new club will be owned by an investor group led by Vietnamese-American businessman Henry Nguyen. He’ll be joined by several minority partners, including Los Angeles Dodgers and Golden State Warriors co-owner Peter Guber and Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan, among others."

Without Chivas USA in the picture, MLS will run a 20-team league next season which will include Orlando City and New York City FC.

The league will then expand for 2017 by adding the expansion Los Angeles franchise along with a new team in Atlanta.

As for the history of the new club in Los Angeles, it will have zero affiliation with Chivas USA so any records or history will remain with Chivas for good while the new team will be just that, completely new.

Hopefully the new Los Angeles based team will have better success than Chivas USA. The chances of such look pretty good given the impressive ownership group that has been formed.
