Long known for their penchant for playing to the level of their competition, the Cincinnati Bengals looked as if they would write another verse to that story before NFL rookie running back Jeremy Hill rumbled 60 yards for a touchdown that finally subdued the Jacksonville Jaguars 33-22.
The Jags (1-8) trailed 26-10 early in the fourth quarter before rookie quarterback Blake Bortles found Allen Hurns for an 18-yard touchdown and followed up with a Denard Robinson 5-yard scoring run that closed the margin to 29-26 with 8:13 left. However, it took just nine seconds for Hill — who was injured earlier in the game — took a Andy Dalton handoff and lapped the Jaguars defense for the game-clinching score.
Filling in for injured starter Gio Bernard, Hill rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, numbers that might make Bernard’s Fantasy football owners feel just a bit uneasy. The Bengals rolled up 423 yards on the afternoon, as the return of Pro Bowl wideout A.J. Green helped open up the offense for Dalton. It was an 18-yard scoring strike from Dalton to Green that had given the Bengals (5-2-1) their 26-10 lead at the 13:54 mark of the fourth quarter.
Bortles had one of his best games of his brief career, completing 22 of 33 passes for 247 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Hurns. Running back Denard Robinson just fell short of recording his third straight 100-yard day, finishing with 94 yards on 17 carries.
