While the Cleveland Browns have some young talent on both sides of the ball, it’s safe to say they still need significant improvements if they’re going to take the next step in the next season or two.
They nearly brought some in as according to Jay Glazer (via SFGate.com), the San Francsico 49ers were very close to trading linebacker Ahmad Brooks to the Cleveland Browns before the NFL deadline.
"Niners outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks has been a second-team All-Pro the past two seasons. And, despite his production, he nearly became a Cleveland Brown earlier this week.According to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, the 49ers nearly dealt Brooks to the Browns before Tuesday’s deadline, but Cleveland backed out late."
While Brooks doesn’t get the same type of publicity that Patrick Willis or even NaVarro Bowman receive, he has proven himself to be a very good linebacker. Granted some of that is helped because of the talent that surrounds him though he would have been a fine addition to the Cleveland Browns roster.
There was no mention of what type of return the San Francisco 49ers would have received in return. It’s the second ‘near’ trade between the two clubs over the past two seasons as the 49ers attempted to trade for oft-troubled wide reciever Josh Gordon last year but the Cleveland Browns decided to walk away from the deal.
As for Ahmad Brooks, the veteran linebacker is now on the wrong side of 30 and has mildly hefty contract figure coming up next year which could explain San Francisco’s desire to shop him.
San Francisco could also be upset with Brooks who admitted he came into the season overweight.
