Coming into the season many believed the Minnesota Timberwolves, ripe with young talent could emerge as a dark horse for a playoff spot in the deep Western Conference.

However thanks to a 3-9 start that seems to be more wishful thinking than anything, especially now that veteran guard Kevin Martin will miss the next 6-8 weeks after undergoing surgery on his broken wrist.

Martin suffered the injury last week during a tilt against the New York Knicks and the hope was that he’d be able to avoid going under the knife though to make sure he experiences a full recovery, an operation was needed despite the fact he’ll be sidelined for potentially upwards of two months.

A former member of the Sacramento Kings and Oklahoma City Thunder, Kevin Martin was in his second season of a four-year contract which he signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves and was putting up a very impressive 20 points per game on 48 percent from the field.

It’s expected that barring any significant setbacks, Kevin Martin will return to the court sometime in January.

As for his replacement on the Minnesota Timberwolves, it seems likely the T’Wolves will employ a rotation of players to provide support while Martin is out. Thaddeus Young, who the team acquired before the season should return to the lineup soon and will likely fill in occasionally at the shooting guard spot. In addition Andrew Wiggins could potentially slide into the two spot while Corey Brewer will likely handle some of the on ball duties vacated by Kevin Martin.

Needless to say, it’s a big loss for the T’Wolves who were hoping for a much different start to their season.
