Johnny Manziel‘s decision to attend a Cleveland Cavaliers game allegedly upset the Browns coaching staff and may have hurt his chances at being named the starting quarterback.

More from Cleveland Browns

After playing well (for the most part) in relief during the Cleveland Browns’ Week 13 loss, there was talk suggesting Johnny Manziel could be promoted to the starting quarterback job.

Those whispers only grew louder after head coach Mike Pettine wouldn’t commit to current starter Brian Hoyer.

Was there a changing of the guard taking place? Nobody really knows, though the signs of such were continually increasing until later in the week when Pettine informed the team and media that Brian Hoyer would remain the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback.

What was behind such a decision? A good week of practice? Perhaps not as it appears Johnny Manziel’s decision to attend a Cleveland Cavaliers game earlier in the week frustrated the coaching staff.

Despite Tuesday being an ‘off day’, the hope was that Manziel, potentially preparing for his first NFL start, would be readying himself for the Week 14 tilt against the Indianapolis Colts but decided to hang out with friends at a basketball game instead.

Per Pro Football Talk:

"Instead, it was seen by some within the organization as a tangible piece of evidence regarding Manziel’s failure to work as hard as he should to prepare himself to play."

In a way you want to side with Johnny Manziel considering the Cleveland Browns did have an off day and he should be allowed to spend a few hours of his day watching a basketball game. On the flip side, you can also see the coaching staff argument that they’d like to see Manziel prepared for the Colts and not out and about.
