Was it the fault of Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel for leading his wide receiver to a bad spot? Or was it the fault of a Carolina Panthers defensive player?
Opinions will likely differ, though there’s no denying that Andrew Hawkins took a might blow in this horrific helmet-to-helmet hit during the first of Sunday’s game.
It appeared as if Hawkins had beat his man and was open for a quick second, which is when Johnny Manziel threw the ball to his Cleveland Browns teammate. However just as quickly as the ball was thrown, the Panthers defender made his way into the play and crunched Hawkins with a blow to the head.
Understandably Andrew Hawkins was shaken up as that was a flush hit. There was no blow to the shoulder beforehand or even anything to deflect the incoming smash, just hard plastic on hard plastic at insane speeds.
Some might say this is simply part of football while others may feel Andrew Hawkins was a defenseless wide receiver and shouldn’t have been subject to such a violent hit. Whatever the case, it’s something that continues to happen and fines/penalties don’t really seem to be making that big of an impact.
Hopefully Andrew Hawkins is okay and the Cleveland Browns get their wide receiver back soon and healthy.
