Jim Schwartz had an exceptional season as the Bills defensive coordinator, so could he be next in line for the head coaching job?

The Buffalo Bills are in need of a head coach after Doug Marrone exercised his out clause this week. The Bills have already been linked to former Buffalo hero Frank Reich and are looking to find a coach who can build off the success of the Bills first winning season since 2004.

After Bill Polian turned down the offer to return to Buffalo to run the team’s front office, the Reich to Buffalo speculation may have lost some steam.

Reich is a Polian guy having coached and played for his teams throughout his career.

Another candidate for the job could already be with the team, as the Bills could look at defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who helped put the league on notice with a stout Bills defense this year.

According to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News, Schwartz could be considered for the job.

Schwartz has had previous head coaching experience, having coached the Detroit Lions from 2009 – 2013 and lead them to one playoff appearance. The Bills defense ranked 3rd in opponents passing yards allowed and 11th in rushing yards allowed.

Perhaps their biggest moment came in consecutive weeks late in the season when they held Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers to zero touchdown passes in consecutive weeks and picked off the duo four times.

When Schwartz was coach of the Detroit Lions, he turned an 0-16 team into a playoff team two years later.

If Schwartz continues to have success as defensive coordinator coupled with his previous head coaching experience, Schwartz could soon become a head coaching candidate around the league.
