Rex Ryan: Buffalo Bills are playoff bound

Rex Ryan proclaimed today at a press conference that the Buffalo Bills will make the playoffs, according to NBC Sports.

As the NFLā€˜s head coaching free agency pool clears up,Ā Rex Ryan is back to his old antics, this time with a new team. The former head coach of the New York Jets, made a promise to media members today that the Buffalo Bills, will reach the playoffs under his leadership.

ā€œIt’s been 15 years since the Bills made the playoffs. Well get ready, we’re going,ā€ said Ryan.

While there was no promise of a Super Bowl victory, Ryan re-affirmed his passion to build a contender. He also took a shot a former head coach Doug Marrone, questioning his ā€œloyaltyā€ to the organization.

Those of you who are familiar with Ryan might remember his first two seasons with the Jets. With a meager offense, led by starting quarterback Mark Sanchez, New York rode the back of one of the league’s scariest defensive units (including 2009 AFC Defensive Player of the Year Darrelle Revis), en route to consecutive AFC Championship game appearances. If not for the play of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, or the coaching genius of Bill Belichick, Ryan might have delivered on his hopes of grandeur. Unfortunately for Ryan, and Jets fans, things began to turn sour rather quickly, as the team failed to parlay the momentum of their 2010-11 season into a playoff run the next year. Over his final four seasons with the Jets, Ryan finished just 26-38, and never posted a record better than 8-8 in any given year. His final tally with the team was 46 wins and 50 losses.

Ryan now takes his defensive talents up North, to a team that has been without the scent of playoff football for 15 years. Yes, not since the ā€œMusic City Miracle,ā€ have the Bills made it to the NFL’s postseason. The sixĀ year head coaching veteran will take the reigns of a team that is possibly on the verge of ending that drought, as they look to build off of a 9-7 regular season campaign that saw the team finish in the top five in several defensive categories. These include fourth in points per game (18.1), fourth in total yards per game (312.2), and third in passing yards per game (205.8).

The team will look to improve on the offensive side of the ball, as they ranked near the bottom of the league in virtually all measurable stat categories. Their passing game, already ranked 18th, will require EJ Manuel to step up and become the signal caller the team desperately needed when they drafted him with the 16th pick of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Florida State, especially with the recent departure of veteran Kyle Orton, who just two weeks ago announced his retirement from the sport. The good news is that star rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins rill provide Manuel with a legitimate number one target heading into next season.
