Urban Meyer was a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman on Friday night.

Following Ohio State‘s 42-20 victory over the Oregon Ducks in the first ever College Football Playoff National Championship, Urban Meyer has been a very busy guy. After reaching the peak of the NCAA football mountain for a third time in his career, and with a second school no less, what else is there to do before spring practice begins? The answer appears to be a late-night television tour. Last night Meyer was a featured guest on the Late Show with David Letterman.

During his appearance, Meyer was asked about a bunch of Buckeye related topics, such as the infamous “play school” Cardale Jones tweet from October of 2012, promising his players that he would receive a tattoo should they win the national title, and even the ongoing discussion of whether college athletes should be paid or not. There was even a mention of the late, great Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes. Below is a video of the segment, courtesy of Eleven Warriors.

A couple of thoughts occur. First of all, how great is it to see a guy like Urban Meyer let loose for a change? The debate between the aforementioned Meyer and Alabama head coach Nick Saban rages on for the title of college football’s best head coach, however, it is difficult to deny that the two share an eerily similar demeanor; they are almost always business about everything. Seeing a smile, and even laughter was a refreshing change of pace as a viewer, even if both were heavily manufactured.

The second thing that begs to be cited is Letterman’s approach here. It appears awfully combative when you really take the time to listen to the questions and commentary. Is there any reason to bring up the lowest point in Woody Hayes’s tenure as the Buckeyes head coach? What is answered by that? Yeah, a ton has been made about Cardale Jones’s maturation, and Urban Meyer has gone to bat for the guy for several weeks now. So is there really any need to insist on reading the nearly 2+ year old tweet?

All criticism aside, Meyer kept a pretty good composure throughout and even elaborated on his stance on the seemingly never-ending debate regarding college athletes and monetary compensation.

“I don’t believe athletes should be paid. I believe they should be taken care of the best they can. The amateur status; being a college student, you’ll lose what college football is all about.”

That is certainly an interesting, and grounded opinion on the matter. Perhaps the players on the Northwestern football are watching.
