Brian Hoyer told reporters on Saturday that he believes it is “disappointing” where the saga concerning his Cleveland Browns teammate Josh Gordon has ventured.

There were many “disappointing” things about the 2014 Cleveland Browns. Despite a 6-3 start, which saw the team in sole possession of first place with less than half of the NFL regular season remaining, the team ended the year winning just one of their final seven contests.

Naturally, at 7-9 they missed the playoffs by a wide margin, continuing a playoff drought that extends back to 2002, tied with the Oakland Raiders for the second longest active streak in the league. A midst the collapse suffered by the franchise, was the return, and completely ineffectiveness of embattled WR Josh Gordon, whose situation quarterback Brian Hoyer recently described as “disappointing” according to reports.

Never mind the quarterback controversy, which will likely continue to linger in the off-season as the team struggles with its offensive identity behind either Hoyer or Johnny Manziel. That is another story completely in and of itself. For now, the focus appears to be in Gordon, a talented young receiver, whose 2013 campaign saw him emerge into one of the game’s best deep threats. In fact, before his troubles, Gordon was an integral part of the reason why fans had a surprising amount of optimism prior to the start of 2014.

The problem rests, of course, with where we are today. Gordon has since been suspended twice for violating the league’s substance abuse policies. The WR has come out in recent weeks to defend himself. Opinions on the matter appear to be split, but for those inside the organization, a palpable tension appears to be felt. Check out the following tweet from the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s own Mary Kay Cabot.

Gordon, 23, is officially suspended for the entirety of the 2015 season as it currently stands. And unfortunately for the team, that appears to be just one of their many issues to tackle. The organization needs a definitive starter behind center, more depth at running back, and a witch doctor to conduct a seance to negotiate with the spirits that have so clearly plagued the franchise since its return to the league in 1999.

Maybe then the Cleveland Browns will finally see the light of the postseason; something which has eluded the once proud franchise for twelve long years.
