Dana White: Anderson Silva’s drug test failure ‘screwed me up’

UFC President Dana White told reporters that former middleweight champion and MMA legend Anderson Silva’s out of competition drug test failure “screwed him up.”

Like fans of mixed martial arts everywhere, UFC President Dana White is still reeling from the news that Anderson Silva, the once indelible legend of the sport, had failed an out of competition drug test for performance enhancing drugs. While not an indication of the former middleweight champion’s career long practices, it certainly raises some doubts concerning the legitimacy of “the Spider’s” legacy. The aftershock of such an announcement was so bad, that White himself said to reporters on Saturday night that the results “screwed him up for days.”

January 31st was supposed to go down as the triumphant comeback for a man once held in wide regard as the sport’s “Michael Jordan.” Never mind the fact that Nick Diaz was popped for marijuana again; a violation that seems about as predictable as the sun-rise these days, and one that came as no surprise to anyone familiar with his history. But after a failed drug test revealed that Silva test positive for two separate banned substances, many are questioning just where his place lies in UFC annals, as well as mma history as a whole.

“It screwed me up for a few days. I was messed up for a few days after that. I’ve been a huge Anderson Silva fan, too, but we’ll talk about that on Wednesday,” White said.

Silva, who will be 40 in April, tested positive specifically for the anabolic steroid drostanolone, as well as androsterone, an endogenous testosterone. The Nevada State Athletic Commission conduct said testing on two separate dates prior to the fight on the 31st. Silva’s positive results showed up on his first test, administered January 9th; his second was on the 19th. As for what that press conference will entail, it is certainly anyone’s guess. However, if White’s tone is any indication, consider the follow an especially unsettling omen.

“Lots of bad s**t.We’re not going to be talking about fun things. We’ll address all the things that have happened lately and what we’re going to do and what’s going to happen from here on out.”
