Free agent running back C.J. Spiller plans to be patient this free agency and wait as long as possible to sign a deal.

When the Buffalo Bills made the blockbuster deal last week to trade linebacker Kiko Alonso to the Philadelphia Eagles for star running back LeSean McCoy, C.J. Spiller knew that his time in Buffalo was over and the team let him know that as well.

Now, the running back sits with a plethora of free agent running backs who will find a new home before next season, but Spiller wants to do things a little differently.

According to Pro Football Talk, the plan for C.J. Spiller is to wait it out and test the waters as he waits for the higher names like DeMarco Murray to find a home before he starts considering where to go. Because of course, Murray could make a ton of money if he were to sign somewhere other than Dallas, or he could be underpaid and play for the Cowboys. With McCoy’s $40 million deal over five years, Murray may be looking to get paid somewhere else. This could leave the door open for Spiller in Dallas.

Other teams that could be looking for a running back like C.J. Spiller includes the Jacksonville Jaguars (who are expected to sign star tight end Julius Thomas), Miami Dolphins (who may not sign a back now that they’re expected to sign Ndamukong Suh for $114), Dallas Cowboys (if they lose Murray), Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, San Diego Chargers (if they lose Mathews), Baltimore Ravens, and more.

C.J. Spiller had his best season in 2012 when he rushed for 1,244 yards and six touchdowns. In 2013 and 2014 he split carries with veteran Bills running back Fred Jackson and he dealt with injury in 2014 as he played in just nine games.

Spiller is a great running back candidate in a market that has busted open this season but Spiller will have plenty of competition against these running backs expected to become free agents: DeMarco Murray, Ryan Mathews, Frank Gore, Justin Forsett, Reggie Bush, Roy Helu, Ray Rice (if a team chooses to sign him), Adrian Peterson, Roy Helu, Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Ahmad Bradshaw among others.

It’s a big year for free agent running backs and we’ll see how sitting back and waiting it out helps or hurts C.J. Spiller in the long run.
