Cleveland Browns in on tight end market

The Cleveland Browns are reportedly interested in veteran tight end Ed Dickson

2015 will be a transitional year, yet again, for the Cleveland Browns franchise.

The NFL has not been kind to the team ever since its return to the league in 1999. With the upcoming draft, fans will be reminded of several key blunders over the years, specifically at quarterback; from Tim Coach to Brady Quinn to Johnny Manziel. However, on Sunday the team is making headlines with regards to another position.

Cleveland is reportedly in the market for a tight end, with particular interest being shown toward veteran Ed Dickson.

Dickson, 27, has spent five seasons in the NFL, mostly flying under the radar. Despite his 6-foot-4 255 lb frame, the third round pick out of Oregon in 2010 has not put up great numbers since his sophomore year in 2011, when he caught 54 passes for 528 yards and five touchdowns for the Baltimore Ravens.

He would win a Super Bowl ring in 2013 with the Baltimore Ravens, yet caught zero touchdowns all season that year.

Thus, it is somewhat of a surprise that the Browns would be looking at Dickson as an ideal candidate to replace the production of fellow free agent Jordan Cameron, who caught 24 passes for 424 yards and two touchdowns in 2014.

Then you take into account how desperate the organization is to revitalize an offense that was ravaged by injuries as well as missteps/controversy behind center. The team will be without playmaking wide receiver Josh Gordon for all of 2015 due to a recent suspension for alcohol abuse.

Dickson alone would not be able to remedy the Browns’ deficiencies on offense. Neither will the signing of veteran Josh McCown, who experienced a career renaissance in 2013, before falling back to Earth last season for Tampa Bay.

For that, Cleveland will have to try to do what they seem to fail at every single year; drafting effectively. For the skills positions, it is not exactly a talent rich class, however, with two first round picks (12th and 19th overall), they will have a chance to make some significant progress. A trade up to try for Alabama standout Amari Cooper makes too much sense to not at least entertain the idea of.

We shall see what happens come April.
