The Miami Dolphins have signed free agent tight end Jordan Cameron to a two year contract worth $15 million.

The Miami Dolphins may not end up giving Charles Clay the money he wants, but they were happy enough to accommodate free agent Jordan Cameron, formerly of the Cleveland Browns. With Clay still operating under a transition tag, the Dolphins assured themselves of a top receiving target at tight end by signing Cameron to a two-year deal that could pay Cameron $15 million.

The announcement came on the heels of a whirlwind day that started with the Browns apparently re-signing Cameron.

This prompted speculation that the Dolphins would intensify negotiations with Charles Clay in an effort to sign him to a long-term deal and avoid the looming threat from the Buffalo Bills, who desperately covet Clay and have reportedly been prepping an offer the Dolphins can’t match, as is Miami’s right per the transition tag.

Then everything was turned upside down.

The Dolphins soon announced that they would be signing Cameron and not the Browns. The money is such that it’s hard to believe the Dolphins would pay Cameron as well as the $7M+ figure tied to Clay’s transition tag, especially when the team just doled out a record contract to defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

Despite their right to do so, the Dolphins apparently won’t lift the tag from Clay and allow him to leave as an unrestricted free agent. Presumably they’re doing this to keep the price high for division rival Buffalo, who will likely go forward with an offer sheet in an attempt to pry Clay from the Dolphins.

The question we may never get an answer to is,”Why the quick turnaround in Miami?”. Cameron is a great talent, but he’s been marred by injury and Clay offers a steadier, familiar option for Ryan Tannehill. What happened in talks that changed their stance in a matter of hours?

Perhaps the Dolphins got a whiff of the deal the Bills were prepping for Clay and decided to cut ties early and get an apt replacement before it was too late. Whatever the case, the Dolphins now have their guy at tight end in what has become an arms race in the AFC East.
