Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has signed his contract and is officially a member of the Miami Dolphins.

The ink is dry on the contract, and nothing can stop this train from rolling. Ndamukong Suh is officialy a member of the Miami Dolphins.

Suh signed his deal Wednesday, which was confirmed during the NFL’s “leagal tampering period” (which is a three-day period in which teams can negotiate with players, but can’t sign them. But they can agree on contracts. But they can’t really agree on contracts. It’s dumb). Until now, Suh and the Dolphins had an agreement, but it wasn’t set in stone (as the Eagles learned from Frank Gore).

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported that the signing was official.

Let’s let Stevie Wonder take it away:

So now the Dolphins are locked into paying Suh a massive amount of money–reportedly $114 million, with $60 million of that guaranteed. That essentially means that Suh will be the extent of their free agent spending this year, and he will tie up their cap for years to come. If there’s ever a player you’re going to sign to that kind of contract, it would be Suh. On the other hand, these kinds of contracts usually aren’t advisable. Best case, this turns into Reggie White with the Packers; worst case, Albert Haynesworth in Washington. Both Suh and Haynesworth have a history of stomping on people’s heads, but other than that, there’s no reason to expect the worst.

The Dolphins had one of the league’s worst run defenses down the stretch last season, a flaw that might have singlehandedly ruined their playoff hopes. Suh is a force against both the pass and the run, so this can only help what was already a fairly strong defense against the pass, and will hopefully stop this kind of game from happening again.

On the other hand, it’s always worth asking if it’s a good idea to have one non-quarterback taking up this much cap space. NFL defenses aren’t swayed by one player, even a great one; it takes a great unit to make a great defense. By tying this much cap space in Suh alone, the Dolphins may have stopped themselves from being able to have a strong unit. Time will tell.
