The Buffalo Bills will extend an offer to tight end Charles Clay, according to reports.

The Buffalo Bills are looking to hit the ground running on the NFL’s free agency period. According to reports from CBS NFL insider Jason La Canfora, the team is looking to extend an offer to tight end Charles Clay.

Clay, a four year veteran of the league is currently under transition tag with the Miami Dolphins. Essentially, the 26 year old out of Tulsa University, is not a lock to leave for any team. Miami reserves the right to match any offer (including the specific contractual terms) up to seven days after one has been proposed.

That being said, should Clay sign with Buffalo, and the Dolphins decline to match, it creates an interesting scenario at TE for the Bills. The franchise currently has Scott Chandler, who put up very similar numbers to Clay last season, slotted at the top of the depth chart. He has another season remaining on a two year deal he signed back in March of 2014.

If Clay is brought in, it would almost certainly mean that Chandler would be cut, if not relegated to a back up role.

Nevertheless, it would be a slight upgrade at the position, and provide Buffalo’s passing attack with some additional artillery heading into 2015. There are questions remaining, however, about who the team’s starting quarterback should be, especially with the recent retirement of veteran Kyle Orton. EJ Manuel has not provided the franchise with stability behind center since his arrival in 2013.

Whether Buffalo will sit tight on Manuel, or seek a replacement, either through free agency or the upcoming NFL Draft, remains to be seen.

Their issues at running back seem to be resolved with the signing of LeSean McCoy, and the defense (on paper at least) should not miss a beat in 2015.

Though 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year Kiko Alonso was traded in exchange for McCoy, his loss should not effect the team as the Bills ranked near the top of the league last season in several major team categories despite an injury that kept the linebacker out for the entire year. Buffalo finished 2014 ranked third in passing defense (205.8 ypg), as well as fourth in points (18.1) and total yards (312.2) allowed per game.
