The Minnesota Vikings have released wide receiver Greg Jennings, according to reports from the team.

Remember when the name Greg Jennings was synonymous with “irreplaceable?” Those days appear to be long gone. Hammering home that sentiment is today’s news that the Minnesota Vikings plan to cut ties with the former pro bowl wide receiver. The nine year NFL veteran had three years remaining on his $47.5 million contract.

The transaction is not too much of a surprise given the franchise’s recent trade history. On Friday, the team acquired fellow pro bowler Mike Wallace from the Miami Dolphins. The talented wide out, like his newly released counterpart, is a few years removed from his peak production. However, at 28, there is the possibility that his best days are still ahead of him.

The same, unfortunately, can probably not be said about the 31 year old Jennings. He has not registered more than 1,000 yards or 10 touchdowns since 2010. While his 2014 campaign was productive with 59 catches for 742 yards, and six scores, it was a far cry from his earlier days with Green Bay.

Wallace meanwhile will hope to bounce back from a somewhat underwhelming year in Miami. In 2014, the seven year veteran quietly produced similar numbers at 67 receptions for 862 yards. The big difference though was the amount of touchdowns. In that regard, Wallace registered four more with 10.

He will look to improve upon a team whose passing game ranked just 28th last season with 202.8 yards per game. Wallace will instantly become the preferred target of now second year quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who had a solid rookie campaign, throwing for 2,919 yards, 14 TD, 12 INT, and an 85.2 passer rating. Staring just 12 games, he completed 64.4 percent of his throws.

Jennings, at this time, remains a solid number two option for any team looking to add depth to their receiving core. A great fit would potentially be Detriot. It would provide Matthew Stafford with an additional weapon downfield, and Jennings could have the opportunity to play for his home state of Michigan.

At this point, however, nothing is certain. But something tells us that in a passing happy game such as this, it will not take long for Jennings to find another landing spot. You can bank on that.
