Accidental goals and goalie gaffes happen all the time in hockey, particularly in the college ranks. But a major mistake in a national championship game will be remembered for a long time.
Unfortunately for poor Boston University goalie Matt OāConnor, this video isnāt going away any time soon.
As seen above, Providence gets a goal from center ice after OāConnor loses the puck in his pads. The gaffe tied the game at 3, and Providence would go on to win 4-3 in regulation.
Now thereās no telling what direction the game would have gone in if OāConnor catches the puck cleanly, but that stands out as a play that changed the contest entirely. Providence benefited with its first national title in program history. It should be noted that OāConnor played very well in Bostonās semifinal win over North Dakota.
Letās just hope OāConnor can move on and have a successful career, in hockey or otherwise. As OāConnor is a junior, he could return to college next season, but is is drawing a lot of attention from NHL clubs.
No goalie is immune to such mistakes, even some of the best of all time. As bad as OāConnorās gaffe was, it doesnāt top Patrick Roy from Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals.
