The train of players to the disabled list continues. The Marlins placed Henderson Alvarez on the DL with a “shoulder injury”. He is scheduled for an MRI on Monday, and we should get more news on his status then. At any rate, us fantasy owners can plan on being without him for at least three starts.

Alvarez was less than sharp on Sunday against the Rays. He gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three in five innigs. We all knew that Alvarez wouldn’t strike out many batters, but he is rarely hit that hard. That was the first indication that something wasn’t quite right.
I recommended Alvarez here last week after injuries to Derek Holland and Ian Kennedy. So those of you that heeded that advice are left looking for a replacement once again. Alvarez was only a fringe option in standard leagues because of his low strikeout totals, so this is geared more towards those of you in 12 team leagues or larger. All of these replacements are available in 60% or less of ESPN leagues.
Trevor Bauer, Indians: It might be a good time to get in on the ground floor here. Bauer is owned is just above 50% of ESPN leagues. He struck out 11 Astros without giving up a hit last Thursday, but he did walk five. Not every game will be that easy, but he does get the slumping White Sox on Wednesday. Bauer just turned 24, and could be in for a breakout season. Picking him up now could end up paying big dividends this year.

Bartolo Colon, Mets: Yes, you have seen his name here a couple of times already this young season, and for good reason. Colon has struck out a batter per inning in his first two starts, and posts a 2.77 ERA and 0.77 WHIP over 13 innings. Oh, and he won both of those games. Perhaps the most intriguing thing for potential owners is that he only needed 163 pitches to get through those 13 innings. As long as he is this efficient, he shouldn’t wear down. At least not in the couple of weeks that you will need him for. He is worth running out there again against the Marlins on Friday.
Shane Greene, Tigers: Greene pitched eight shutout innings against the Twins on Thursday. While the Twins are bad, this was still a good outing for Greene. He only gave up four hits and walked one. The Pirates will give more resistance than the Twins did, but Greene could be on his way to a good season as well at the age of 26. There is nothing wrong with picking someone up on upside alone. Especially this early in the year.
Drew Pomeranz, Athletics: Pomeranz was brilliant in his season debut on Friday. He gave up just two hits in seven shutout innings while striking out six. He has been a top prospect almost the whole time in the minors, and gets the benefit of a pitcher’s park at home. He is definitely worth a look against the Astros on Wednesday.
Carlos Martinez, Cardinals: Martinez has been the best pitching prospect in the Cardinals organization since they called up Shelby Miller. He did not disappoint in his first start of the season against the Reds on Sunday. He gave up two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight in six innings. He gets the Reds again on Saturday, and I wouldn’t be afraid to use him against just about anyone if he can perform that well against the Reds.
Stay tuned to Fantasy CPR for all of you add/drop and injury replacement needs all season long!
